“WE ALWAYS SWING”® JAZZ SERIES PRESENTS IJD CELEBRATION. SAXOPHONIST BOBBY WATSON DIRECTS/PERFORMS W/COJO, WEDNESDAY, AP
“We Always Swing”® Jazz Series closes Jazz Appreciation Month with an International Jazz Day concert featuring acclaimed SAXOPHONIST BOBBY WATSON, who will conduct and perform with the 18-piece COLUMBIA JAZZ ORCHESTRA (“CoJo”), WEDNESDAY, APRIL 30, 7 P.M. at the MISSOURI THEATRE. The concert – set to be filmed in its entirety - is billed as “A BOBBY WATSON RETROSPECTIVE.” The saxophonist chose the material for CoJo, selected from his more than 100 compositions. “Bobby Watson has created great music since the 1970s, since he was the musical director with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers,” said Jon Poses, Jazz Series Executive & Artistic Director. As a bandleader, Watson founded Horizon, the successful small group that released several major label titles, each housing original music. From 2000-2020 Watson directed Jazz Studies at UMKC. “He’s the perfect person to lead this ambitious project” said Poses, noting CoJo has rehearsed the material both on its own and with the Kansas City area-based saxophonist. “This is going to be special – seeing Watson’s and CoJo’s collaborative talent on full CoJo musicians are MU faculty, others direct programs within CPS District.” The “Retrospective” received support from Budds Ctr. for American Music Studies at MU; NEA; Mo. Arts Council, Columbia’s Office of Cultural Affairs & Convention & Visitors Bureau. TICKETS/INFORMATION: Call the Jazz Series Box Office at 573-449-3009 or visit wealwaysswing.org. Student/Group Discounts available.
